History of Independence

The history of Belize is very interesting: for about 4000 years Belize was the keystone of the empire of the ancient Maya, until their decline at the end of the first millenium A.D. Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America, that fact is connected with country's history. The British and Spanish disputed the region in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1854 Belize became formally the colony of British Honduras, and it has retained this status for more than 100 years. The name of the country – Belize – was restored in 1973. Being still a British Crown Colony, it became self-governing territory already in 1964. Territorial disputes between the UK and Guatemala delayed the independence of the country. It attained complete independence from Britain in 1981.  Guatemala refused to recognize the new nation until 1992.

Currently Belize is a member of the British Commonwealth, the United Nations, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM), the World Bank, the Caribbean Development Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Inter-American Development Bank and of many other regional and international organisations.
